JesterMedia Labs

Where useful ideas get tested.

Labs is the home for experiments, early-stage products, and small tools that may grow into the next JesterMedia release.

How Labs works

Four stages, one honest label.

Everything in Labs carries the stage it is actually at. Nothing here is presented as more finished than it is.

Stage 1

Exploration

A problem worth solving has been identified, but the shape of the answer has not. Most ideas stop here, and that is the point of having the stage at all.

Stage 2

In development

The idea has survived contact with a prototype. Work is active, the scope is still moving, and no release date is promised.

Stage 3

Available

Usable today, in public, with the rough edges still visible. Feedback at this stage changes the product more than at any other.

Stage 4 is leaving Labs. A project that earns its own product page, support path, and privacy policy graduates into the main portfolio and stops being an experiment.
Criteria

What makes something a Labs project.

It starts from a real annoyance

Projects here begin with something that genuinely wasted someone's time, not with an interesting technology looking for a use. If the problem cannot be described in one sentence to someone outside the studio, it is not ready.

It can be useful while small

A good Labs project is worth using in its first version. Ideas that only become valuable after months of infrastructure tend to stay in exploration until they can be cut down.

It respects the file and the device

Where work can happen locally, it should. Several projects exist specifically because the obvious hosted version would require handing over material that users have good reason to keep.

It is allowed to fail

Labs projects can be abandoned without ceremony. Keeping that option open is what makes it safe to try things that are unlikely to work, which is where the interesting results come from.

Have an idea worth testing?

JesterMedia welcomes focused product ideas and useful collaboration opportunities. The most useful message describes the problem and who has it — not the feature list.
